There is something quietly meaningful about the moment we return home.
We remove the layers we've worn throughout the day, settle into familiar surroundings, and begin to slow down. Yet while we thoughtfully choose what accompanies us outside our homes, a well made coat, a favourite knit, a pair of shoes crafted to last, we rarely extend that same consideration to what we wear indoors.
More often than not, we slip into disposable slippers designed for convenience rather than longevity. At De Casa, we wondered if home deserved better.
That question became the beginning of The Karla.
Home Shoes Deserve Thoughtful Design
We believe that the objects we live with every day shape the way we experience our homes.
A dining chair can be beautifully designed. A ceramic mug can transform a morning ritual. A linen throw can bring warmth to a quiet evening. Why shouldn't the same be true for the shoes we wear indoors?
For us, home shoes are not an afterthought. They are an extension of the home itself, objects that accompany slow mornings, long conversations, weekend routines, and peaceful evenings.
Unlike mass produced house shoes, thoughtfully designed handcrafted home shoes invite us to appreciate comfort without compromising aesthetics or quality. They remind us that the simplest moments often deserve the greatest care.
Crafted by Artisans in Mexico
Some collaborations begin with a business plan. Ours began with a conversation.
On a sunny winter afternoon in Mexico City, I met Antonio while wandering through the city's streets. He was selling beautiful cow leather, carefully explaining where it came from, how the animals had been responsibly raised, and how the hides were respectfully repurposed after being used for meat. Nothing was wasted.
Curious, I stopped to speak with him in my very limited Spanish. Despite the language barrier, we quickly discovered we shared similar values: respect for craftsmanship, appreciation for honest materials, and the belief that objects should be made with intention rather than excess.
Months later, I reached out with a simple question: Would you be interested in creating a small collection of home shoes together?
He said yes.
Today, every pair of De Casa handcrafted home shoes is carefully made by Antonio and his team in Mexico. Their expertise, patience, and attention to detail are present in every stitch, transforming natural materials into something designed to be lived with for years to come.
For us, craftsmanship is not simply about the finished product. It is about preserving human skill, celebrating traditional techniques, and building relationships rooted in trust.
Why We Chose Natural Leather
Every material tells a story.
When designing The Karla, we wanted a material that would become more beautiful with time rather than wear out after a season. Natural leather offered exactly that.
Its breathability allows feet to remain comfortable throughout the day, adapting naturally across changing seasons. Its durability means every pair is created to accompany years of everyday rituals rather than months. Most importantly, leather develops a unique patina over time, reflecting the life of the person who wears it.
Unlike many synthetic slippers, our leather home shoes evolve alongside their owner. Small variations in texture, subtle creases, and softened finishes become part of their character, proof of a life well lived. We believe the most meaningful objects are not those that remain untouched, but those that quietly age with us.
Introducing The Karla
The Karla was created for the moments that often go unnoticed.
For the first coffee of the morning. For reading by an open window. For preparing dinner, hosting friends, or simply enjoying the comfort of being home.
More than a pair of slippers, it is an invitation to embrace a slower rhythm of living, one where quality is chosen over quantity, craftsmanship over convenience, and intention over excess.
Thoughtfully designed and handcrafted in limited quantities, The Karla reflects the values that continue to guide everything we create at De Casa.
